I started out the day wanting to make an easy Jello recipe, but ended up going down a rabbit hole of 1980's synth pop.

The recipe is for Jello Yogurt Whips and the rabbit hole is known simply as... Devo.  I started singing their song "Whip It" to myself as I whipped up the Jello.

Suddenly, I had to watch the video.

Man, oh man.  It is even more bananas than I remembered.  They're in pointy hats on a dude ranch, and their front man is whipping the clothes off a lady in an old timey costume.  (below)  What does it all mean?  And why?!  I scoured the Internet, looking for someone to explain it to me.

I learned that the video was based on this old girlie magazine that they found.

Jerry Casale explained,

"There was a feature article on a guy who had been an actor and fell on hard times, he wasn't getting parts anymore. He moved with his wife to Arizona, opened a dude ranch and charged people money to come hang out at the ranch. Every day at noon in the corral, for entertainment, he'd whip his wife's clothes off with a 12-foot bullwhip... We said, 'OK, that's the basis for the video. We'll have these cowboys drinking beer and cheering Mark on as he's in the barnyard whipping this pioneer women's clothes off while the band plays in the corral."

So there you go.  Simple.

Kind of like this Jello recipe, now that I think about it.  You are literally just whipping yogurt up with Jello.  

Just make sure to whip it, whip it good.

Low Carb Jello Yogurt Whips


  • 1 (.3 oz) package Sugar Free Jello, any flavor
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 3/4 cup cold water
  • 8 oz plain yogurt


1.  Dissolve Jello in boiling water. Add cold water.

2.  Chill until slightly thickened, about 30 minutes.

3.  Add yogurt and beat with an electric mixer until the mixture is light and fluffy.

4.  Pour into 4 individual cups or small serving bowls.

5.  Chill for about 2 hours.
