This Sugar Free Marmalade recipe is a zero carb treat with only 2 calories per tablespoon. Yes, you heard that correctly. Zero carbs and 2 calories is... not a lot.
Greetings my fine furry friends.
Today we are going to make a recipe that comes to us from deepest Peru. I'm speaking of course of orange marmalade, Paddington Bear's jelly of choice. There is this great scene in Paddington 2 where he teaches a fellow inmate how to make orange marmalade. (video below)
It's pretty adorable.
The Sugar Free Marmalade recipe we are making today is very similar to the one Paddington made, except that ours has no sugar.
Not even a little.
You start by peeling ¼ of an orange and slicing the peel into very thin matchsticks.
Then you boil the peel in water for 15 minutes. Next you add your sugar-free sweetener of choice along with some Sugar-Free Orange Jello. Put the Sugar-Free Marmalade in the fridge for an hour and a half to gel, and then you are done. You'll have a tasty batch of sugar-free orange marmalade with 2 calories and zero carbs.
Paddington Bear would be very impressed.

Hi.
I am looking forward to making this and have purchased all the ingredients.
Two questions…..
1. In your words under one of the pictures of the marmalade you say ‘you start by peeling 1/2 an orange’ but the recipe says 1/4 orange.
2. I have both Naval (thicker skinned) oranges and thin skinned juice oranges.
Which do you suggest I use for this.
Thanks so much
EmilyKrill says
Sorry, that was an error on my part. You just need the peel of 1/4 of an orange. I used a regular thick-skinned orange, but I'm sure that a thin-skinned orange peel would work too. I don't really think that matters too much, so long as you slice the peels thinly. Thanks so much for the catch!
Deanna Dyke says
Do you think this could be used in my orange chicken recipe that calls for orange marmalade?
EmilyKrill says
I honestly don’t know if it would incorporate well into an orange sauce. You’d need to experiment. I do have a similar Sweet and Sour Chicken recipe though. https://www.resolutioneats.com/blog/low-carb-keto-sweet-and-sour-chicken/
Pattey Wright says
Can I make orange chicken with this recipe?
EmilyKrill says
No, I don't think that would be good at all. It's too strong of an orange flavor. Here's a similar recipe for sweet and sour chicken though, if you are interested. https://www.resolutioneats.com/blog/low-carb-keto-sweet-and-sour-chicken/

Please excuse my innocence, but I've not made keto marmalade before. You say to peel the orange and cut into 1inch matchsticks.and add these to water and boil for 15 mins......Is the flesh of the orange discarded (eaten separately) or is this added to the water to be boiled with the peel?
EmilyKrill says
No, just use the orange peel.

I’m an avid canner. Could this be made in a larger batch, placed in jars and processed in a water bath? That way, I can gift to family and friends, and could be kept on a shelf until needed. Thank you.
EmilyKrill says
I’ve never done any canning, so I’m afraid I don’t know. I don’t see why it wouldn’t work though.
Dawn says
Being made of jello, it will decompose with time. It would not be "shelf stable" however if gifting soon it may hold up slightly longer than one week refrigerated.
Emily Krill says
Yes, it will likely last a little longer, but better to be on the safe side.

"2 packages Sugar-Free Orange Jello" - what brand / size do you use? I live in a whole other country with different options so it would help if I knew how big a pkt is, just in case ours are twice the size (or half!) and I get it all wrong 🙂 Thanks!
EmilyKrill says
Oh, sorry. We only have one size of Sugar Free Jello here which is .3 oz per box. I'll update the recipe to make that clear. Thanks for letting me know!
Embobaroo says
Great, thank you! So that's a bit under 10g - I can work with that. I just have to hope I can find an orange flavour, all I've ever seen so far is berry flavour. But I really want some marmalade!
Linda D says
Can this be made with plain gelatin as Jello contains maltodextrin and aspartame which is not Keto
EmilyKrill says
No, without Jello it would be disgusting.
Sonia Lunas says
Hmm, gelatin is jello - just unsweetened and without the offending ingredients (aspartame, maltodextrin). So how could we make this with plain gelatin? I for one get a terrible headache from aspartame - so that isn't even an option for me and many others who are sickened by it.
Mariel C Kraus says
Hi EmilyKrill! I just posted a comment about the health risk of aspartame and also just made 2 quarts of keto berry jam to share with my friends and patients. You CAN use plain (bovine) gelatin and you can amp up the orange flavor with orange extract. I thickened my Huckleberry jam with xanthan gum but also added chia seeds. For orange marmalade, I wouldn't recommend the chia but use xantham cautiously as it clumps up. Sprinkle it thinly over the top of your hot jam and whisk it in quickly after the jam has boiled down enough so that it isn't watery - add it at the end and let it cook up another couple of minutes, then let it cool.
Good for you that you are vigilant about toxins in your food! 🙂
Sonia Lunas says
Oh my, that's very helpful info. Thank you!!

I had to try this as I miss my toast and marmalade every morning for breakfast. I went and got the Jello but forgot an orange. I was determined to make this so I found a lemon and a lime past their prime but the skins were fine. So I made this with those, using the orange jello and adding a tsp of orange extract. It is delicious. The bitterness of the lemon and lime with the taste of orange just hits the spot. Great recipe. I will try this again and again.

Yay! So glad you like the marmalade. Using lemons and limes was a good substitution.
